At the end of year 2, students should be able to:
i. explain and justify the need for a solution to a problem (Design Situation)
ii. state and prioritize the main points of research needed to develop a solution to the problem
iii. describe the main features of one existing product that inspires a solution to the problem
iv. present the main findings of relevant research.
The UAE Nurses Association claims that one of the most difficult parts of their job is
dealing with small children who have a fear of needles. Although the association has some
tips and tricks like putting numbing cream to partially freeze the surface of the skin
before injecting medicine, sometimes the anxiety levels of small children are so high that
it is difficult to get them to hold still. If only there was an easier way to administer
medicine within the syringe.
The Problem:
My dog goes around the house biting things and that ruins the furniture. So when guests come over it doesn’t look good because it looks like old furniture when we just bought it. I train my dog a lot but dogs cant stop chewing because that is a habit they are born with. Although there are many things to solve this problem I am pretty sure I could make something more creative and something that would attract my dog's attention.
So I am basically going to make an attractive chew toy for my dog so he can chew that and not chew the furniture in the house.
The Problem:
Many people around the world have money problems and girls can't afford to get jewelry for themselves. So my idea is to help those girls out by making jewelry with recycled items and also items that I find around my house to make jewelry and give it to the charity associations and also sell a few of them and give the money raised to the charity association.
DESIGN BRIEF
Child Friendly Syringe
The design brief for my child friendly syringe is a liquid syringe
which doesn’t have such a big and sharp needle and has a good grip so when the
nurses place the syringe over the child’s skin the syringe doesn’t movie here
and there and goes in the wrong place and something bad happens to the child do
first of all there has to be a healthy grip and tight grip for the
nurse/doctor. I am aiming for mostly like nurses, skin care doctors, just
normal checkup doctors and also maybe blood testers, but I am mostly aiming for
the nurses because they are usually the people who have to go through all the
tantrums the children make and all the crying they do when they see a syringe.
My idea for they shape, so my idea is to make a different for the boys and a
different one for the girls. For the girls I am thinking of doing a butterfly
because you know how the top part of the butterfly is like pointy so that could
be the syringe shape for the girls and for the boys I was thinking like a
mini football at the end of the syringe so when the nurse pushes the football
the needle comes out and pokes it but while the nurse pushes the football baby
songs start to play the same for the girls. There aren’t really any specific colors
but like pink and all the girl colors for the girls and like blues for the boys.
My target audience are little babies and 3-5 year old.
Dog Chew Toy
The design brief for the chew to for my dog is going to be a
rubbery/ soft chew toy for my dog which will have the scent of dog food because
there are going to be dog biscuits/snacks in it. I am making this chew toy
because my dog always goes around the house chewing the furniture even though
he has so many chew toys to chew he still decides to chew the furniture which
is quite shocking. I am mostly aiming
for dog owners and maybe also pet shop keepers and also veterinarians. I am
trying to make the shape a dog bone since its chew toy for my dog and other
dogs. I am thinking that the texture should be smooth, bite able and soft for the
dog and not too hard that it breaks the dog’s teeth just the right texture. I was
thinking of the color and I thought maybe like a neon orange color and so its
bright enough for the dog to see.
Jewelry The design brief for my second design is different types of handmade jewelry for the poor people around the world. I am making handmade jewelry out of house items and recycled items to. I want to do this because I feel really bad for all the people who can’t afford to get jewelry and want to express their personality more than they can. There obviously can’t be a specific shape because it’s all different and unique. I am mostly aiming for like Kenya and Africa and etc. I’m not trying to be racist but those are the most common places I know that are a bit poor. My idea is to help the girls and boys too so we can let the people show who they are and what they want to be and also give them a chance to be free with wearing anything. I am also thinking of doing something to do with clothes because they are all walking around in torn clothes and some don't even have clothes so they burn from the hotness in their countries. I was thinking of summer clothes since it's summer half of the time.
